Is it uncommon for dragonflies to be found in the Toronto, Ontario area? Cause today l found a dragonfly in my kitchen (which l do not even know where to begin with how it got in the house) and l assumed that dragonflies were not even in this area and were in more grassy wetland type of places. And it was not one of those small dragonflies .. it was like a big one.

Dragonflies...

Below is a list of dragonflies that might be found in ur general area. How the dragonfly/damselfly got into the house, who knows. The good news is that the presence of dragonflies & damselflies may be taken as an indication of good ecosystem quality.

I am not sure what their territory is, but that one found you, by God, so there must be others about!

List from 2nd site listed below:
Powdered Dancer (Argia moesta)
Eastern Forktail (Ischnura verticalis)
Ebony Jewelwing (Calopteryx maculata)
Eastern Red Damsel (Amphiagrion saucium)
Variegated Damsel (Chromagrion conditum)
Boreal Bluet (Enallagma boreale)
Several Spreadwing species (Lestes spp.) (almost certainly Lestes dryas & Lestes rectangularis)
Several Bluets (Enallagma spp.)
Canada Darner (Aeshna canadensis)
Common Green Darner (Anax junius)
Common Whitetail (Libellula lydia)
Twelve-Spotted Skimmer (Libellula pulchella)
Widow Skimmer (Libellula luctuosa)
Four-spotted Skimmer (Libellula quadrimaculata)
White-faced Meadowfly (Sympetrum obstrusum)
Yellow-legged Meadowfly (Sympetrum vicinum)
Prince Baskettail (Epitheca princeps)
Common Baskettail (Epitheca cynosura)
Dot-tailed Whiteface (Leucorrhinia intacta)
Other Sympetrum spp.

Not sure if u want to identify ur visitor, but if u google images of the species listed u should find ur guy.

Dragonflies...

It is uncommon but it can be in Toronto (May be they r Damsel Fly) the dragon fly can also get attracted towards light source by chance it might have come to ur house due to light but they r short lived .

As u r aware that they r found in grassy wetlands because they lay their eggs in wetland the larva remains in water & when they emerge out of larvae they r seen hovering on grasses.
it is common insect but not in houses that is uncommon happening indeed. I do not know how far it u house to the nearest wetland?

Dragonflies...

dragon flies or daddy long legs or even cran flies or even leather jackets as all are same horrid little pests just different names for them are to be found world over esp where ever there is grass they serve no purpose much like the common fly but unlike the fly which spreads disease the dragonfly is just a pest
